The Switch-Mode Assisted Linear Amplifier (SMALA) is a hybrid amplifier topology, which combines a linear (analogue) and a switch-mode (digital) amplifier, to produce an amplifier with the advantages of both circuits while minimising the disadvantages. This topology is aimed at audio power amplifiers where both high efficiency and high fidelity are required. This thesis aims to expand the existing technology to produce a high power amplifier suitable for use in the public address industry.
Initially, the prior work in the field is presented to give the relevant background information and to underline the current state of the technology. The design is then analysed to yield the most suitable topology for a high power application. Following this, a detailed description of an initial prototype and the final design is given.
The results from the testing of both the prototype and final design are discussed, with recommendations made for future improvements. The final design was capable of high output power at high efficiency, with ЗООW at 86% efficiency measured. The amplifier produced more distortion then expected, with О.З5% distortion at this power level.
